The smooth and harmonious functioning of a team is crucial to organizational health and productivity. Team cohesion begins with trust and respect. In order to develop an atmosphere of trust, respect, and transparent sharing, each team member must be accountable for the state of the team: past, present, and future. They must reflect on the behaviour that they exhibit within the team setting and be prepared to modify their behaviour for the good of the team.
Benefits of a cohesive team
The cohesiveness of the team is crucial to organizational health and productivity. This involves the creation of an environment where team members feel:
- safe and comfortable working together—free from harassment, abuse, or bullying;
- confident working collaboratively to accomplish the team’s and organization’s goals;
- positive that their individual contributions are valued and respected; and
- accountable for their conduct toward others and the team as a whole.
During phase I, one-on-one consultant-led employee interviews in a private and safe environment will allow for employees to articulate the deep-rooted issues that they perceive are impacting them and what may be required to build a stronger and more cohesive team. Upon completion of the individual interviews, a written report containing a thematic analysis of the interview data is provided which contains recommendation. (This report maintains confidentiality and anonymity.)
In phase II, the full team comes together for two half-day facilitated sessions. Post-interviews, a half-day facilitated group discussion is conducted which includes establishing the ground rules towards the creation of a team code of conduct and a review of the key findings and themes revealed in phase 1. A skilled facilitator will induce this sharing so as to support innovative thinking towards addressing solutions to current and future problems. Phase 3 is a follow-up discussion session that is facilitated one to two months later to check in with the team and collectively troubleshoot previously agreed upon solutions and explore any new problems or issues.
